Your Campmaster Speaks Again
I can hardly believe it’s been 23 years since I flew to Los Angeles and recorded Anchor Bay’s SLEEPAWAY CAMP 2 & 3 audio commentaries with screenwriter Fritz Gordon and director Michael A. Simpson. Well, I can believe it when I look in the mirror. But anyway. Those not terrified by my very Aussie accent on the commentaries might have wanted to hear more from me in audio format over the years, and I’ve always considered the idea of doing new updated commentaries or a podcast for you guys but the timing has just never worked out so far.
So I was chuffed when Born 2 Be Rad approached me about appearing on his retrospective interview video for the SLEEPAWAY CAMP SURVIVAL KIT. He had already been recorded interviews for the video with several past Anchor Bay staff members who were part of making the set happen – including the designer of the much-loved boxset! Then comes our chin-wag about the movies and the set. It sure was a RAD time reminiscing and keeping those memories fresh. In fact, we gabbed so much, it’s spread across three videos. As always, I remain candid talking about SLEEPAWAY CAMP – as the fans deserve.
In the first, you get a sweeping retrospective on the SURVIVAL KIT by many of the minds who made it happen, with me coming in in the second half.
Next up, we went off on a tangent discussing the mysterious Sandpiper Pictures, who released new blu-ray editions of SLEEPAWAY CAMP 2 & 3 to the marketplace in recent years once the Scream Factory discs went out of print. What was curious about these editions were that they appeared without fanfare – no new extras – and while they are applauded for keeping the movies out in the home video market, even those releases are now out-of-print and further releases of the titles on BD in USA are doubtful. Where did Sandpiper come from and what was the reasoning for these releases? What does it mean for future editions? We indulge in a little healthy speculation. Two guys just riffing.
Lastly, we turn to Scream Factory’s recent 4K discs of SLEEPAWAY CAMP 2 & 3! As you may have already heard, these editions relied on many archival extras from the DVD and Blu-Ray editions, several of which I supplied in both 2002 and 2015 to Anchor Bay and then Scream Factory. While new extras were scant on these 4K discs, we missed out debuting the brand new Uncut version of part 3, Angela’s Wasteland. So in this video I drop some details on that edition, which you will hopefully get to see someday! I was pleasantly surprised how well it is turning out.
